Earth First Then Coffee

How I switched up my morning routine with an all-in-one solution.

Using Tayst coffee pods to put the earth first then coffee.

Every morning I stumble out of bed and pour myself a cup of ambition just like Dolly said. Like clockwork, I get the wake up call from the pups, hit the power button on my Keurig and wait for both myself and the machine to warm up. Since the pandemic hit, my coffee consumption at home shot from two days a week to seven days a week. Increasing the amount of waste I’m personally responsible for by 350%.. and that’s just coffee. That’s a huge increase and a number that led me down a rabbit hole of different ways I could put the Earth first then coffee.

It’s no secret that our planet is in desperate need of our attention. Earth’s climate is changing at a rapid rate which is anxiety inducing all on it’s own. There’s even a clock in Manhattan that has a countdown to the second that climate change will no longer be irreversible. That countdown is now less than a decade away!

..Audible gasp..

If you’re like me, the thought of irreversible damage to the planet sent you straight to Google. I started brainstorming ideas which would lighten my carbon footprint and produce a greener lifestyle (standard recycling practices aside). All of this led me back to the plastic k-cups that were beginning to stack up inside my recycling bin. Even though I recycle each one, I couldn’t help but think in the year 2020 there wasn’t a better solution for this. After all, the plastic is just one issue when it comes to making single-serve coffee at home. Millions of tons of used coffee grounds go to landfills each year and create the greenhouse gas known as methane. Knowing that methane is quite a bit stronger than carbon dioxide, I wanted a solution for both issues.

After a few days of Google research, I found a handful of companies that create biodegradable and compostable k-cups! After that, I did some more research, tried a handful of brands and discovered a new eco-friendly way to start my mornings! Below is the company I thought created the best solution for putting the Earth first then coffee without compromising their product. Take a look!

Tayst – Coffee Roaster

From an eco-friendly concept to branding with a vintage flair, I’ve grown to love everything about Tayst in just a few weeks. Tayst was the third company I tried after researching solutions and I knew I’d found the answer once I got to them. Tayst offers a variety of coffee, a solution to those who can’t compost at home and utilizes a subscription based platform with a handful of options for customization. This company literally offers a true closed-loop solution. I’m more than satisfied with the coffee I selected below; however, it’s the peace of mind knowing I’m putting the Earth first then coffee that ultimately sold me.

 Vintage Vanilla Cream

Vintage Vanilla Cream

The vintage vanilla cream is the lightest of the three I purchased. The smell this pod produces makes you think you’re baking a dessert instead of making coffee which adds sweetness to the mug. It’s base is a medium South American blend spun and ground down with old-school natural vanilla oils. This pod encapsulates the feeling of fall and Tayst great too!

Medium & Heroic

Medium & Heroic

The medium & heroic was my favorite blend. As the name suggest, this one falls smack dab in the middle of the coffee scale. Unlike the vintage vanilla cream, this pod gives off notes of a bold-breakfast roast without the robust and sweet smell of vanilla. This bold and burly blend comes from South America. It is, however, still sweet with a slightly acidic tang which makes it the perfect morning hero.

Bold & Brazen

Bold & Brazen

My third and final choice was the bold and brazen. This bold blend offers a rich-deep flavor with a smokey-cocoa finish. This was my least favorite but only because I tend to lean towards a lighter roast. It definitely packs a punch for the long haul after those long nights.
